Report by Des Drumm
This was the big showdown. The shoot-out at High Noon (well, 1 pm). After Deputy Hubert Beaumont had steered Halverstown to last year’s end of season win (with 10 off the last two balls by Sean Dempsey), we knew this was our Gunfight at OK Corral. We travelled with heavy artillery, with players such as John Threadgold , Tim Ronaldson and Big Barney O’Sullivan. Very heavy artillery. This was the meanest- and heaviest- bunch of men the Halverstown Hole- in- the- Wall Gang had mustered in a long time.
As Hubert predicted, when Mt Juliet won the toss they chose to bat. But they did not get it easy. After 25 overs we had them pinned down and they were 95 for 7, thanks in no small part to a sensational 7 overs from John Threadgold in which he took out 4 of their men (OK, some were boys) for just 8 runs. However, their hired antipodean guns then rode into town and bushwhacked us: Richie and Cal.The men with no (sur-) names. These guys were fast. Very fast. 9 overs later and 191 was up. In the last over I let them have it and managed to hold them to 21. 212 in Total- good shooting by the Juliet Boys.
One of our wimmen folk was there, Noreen. She was studying her reflexology. She needs to look at our reflexes. Richie and Cal were too hot to hold for our boys in the field -as were most of their other men. Greasy hands.
Our innings built slowly to start with and top-gun Mick Neville bit the dust early for 6. Tim and Ian then hit them hard and gave us hope ; these pardners took us over the century . There was then a good quick-fire 19 from Barry who was fast on the run, before Monty and Barney were told that it was now do-or-die. We died. 32 runs short of the target. It was a good show, but we were down. A lot of Good, a bit of Bad and definitely some Ugly. No saloon afterwards, but at least we got vittles this time.
