Report by Hubert Beaumont

In a full weekend of club cricket and other activities it was difficult to get a team together, the last man being selected 2 hours before the match started. It was a combination of youth and “old contemptibles” who travelled to Portlaoise to fulfill this fixture in glorious sunshine.

Laois, captained by William Blackley, won the toss and elected to bat. Whilst their batsmen appeared confident the Halverstown bowlers pegged them back and aided by some exceptional fielding wickets tumbled. John Browne and Adi Krishnan got the majority of the wickets but the other bowlers all kept the pressure on by sticking to line and length. It should be noted also that Andy Myers took an exceptional catch at square leg. I. Woodward who came in at No.10 smashed the ball to the 4 corners of the ground until he ran out of partners.

At tea both captains reflected on the sporting nature of the game and the significant contribution of the younger players in both teams.

Iain Walker and Cameron Ruddock opened the batting for Halverstown and both appeared set when they were out. After that wickets tumbled until Bill Hobbs came in and steadied the ship. Just when he looked as though he was going to finish the match for us he was undone by an off-break that cut back 18 inches to remove his off bail. After that it was a question of accumulating the last few runs without further loss of wickets.
