Halverstown won by 41 runs
Trinity are a nice bunch of lads and it was a pleasure to
welcome them back to Halverstown. You will recall that they were in a dominant
position when the away match was rained off.
Mick Neville returned as captain after a break taken for
health reasons during which time John Threadgold had been a worthy deputy in
his absence and architect of the win in Ashbourne. He handed the team back in
good shape ‘pawing the ground’ for more success.
Two weeks after the event it is difficult to recall all the
details but the scorebook records that we started well with the three R’s,
Rashid, Ryall and Rashid putting on 68 between them. It is worth noting that
Barry was dismissed by a stunning catch from Kingston who modestly put it down
to years of goalkeeping. Halverstown could consider goalkeeping practice
instead of nets on a Thursday evening?
After the three R’s there was a lull until the redoubtable
Dessie Gray (17) came to the crease with Halverstown’s aging wicket keeper and
they steadied the ship with a partnership of 46 runs. Eventually the innings
was concluded on a respectable 158 runs with Threadgold.K and Rajwar getting 3
wickets apiece.
Trinity’s opening 3 batsmen set the tempo scoring 78 between
them but the tail failed to wag and eventually they were out for 117, Moon
taking 3 wickets and Neville 1 for 9.
The innings was particularly notable for 3 pieces of
fielding. Wasif who is electric in the field turned a relatively safe run into
a batsman’s nightmare by picking up the ball and throwing down the stumps in
one movement leaving the hapless batsman stranded. On another occasion 3
fielders went for the ball, Neville and Wasif collided, the ball went into the
air and the ever watchful Moon stood back and took the catch. Finally, Dessie
who had ‘done’ his hamstring batting covered the ground like a young gazelle to
scoop up a catch to dismiss the final batsman.
